The Hebrew newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth reported: “The Prime Minister is expected to hold a discussion today (Tuesday) on the application of sovereignty in the West Bank (time not specified).”
The report added that the session comes in response to the intention of several countries to recognize a Palestinian state.
The newspaper noted that this is the second session of its kind on this issue. About two weeks ago, a limited ministerial forum chaired by Netanyahu discussed the possibility of applying sovereignty in the West Bank.
On Sunday evening, the Hebrew site Walla, citing unnamed sources, reported that Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar informed his U.S. counterpart Marco Rubio during talks on Wednesday that Tel Aviv is preparing to declare its sovereignty over the West Bank in the coming months.
Meanwhile, the Hebrew newspaper Haaretz reported that Netanyahu asked ministers in the “mini-cabinet” to discuss several issues, including Israel’s response to the intentions of various countries to recognize a Palestinian state in September, by pushing toward annexation of the West Bank.
This comes ahead of the United Nations General Assembly in New York this September, where countries including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Finland, Luxembourg, Portugal, and San Marino are expected to push for recognition of a Palestinian state, alongside other European countries that have previously expressed similar positions, such as the United Kingdom, France, Malta, and Norway.
Parallel to the ongoing extermination campaign in Gaza, the Israeli army and settlers have escalated attacks in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, resulting in at least 1,016 Palestinians killed, about 7,000 injured, and more than 18,500 arrested, according to Palestinian data.
With U.S. support, Israel has carried out a genocidal campaign since October 7, 2023, leaving 63,557 Palestinians dead and 160,660 injured, the majority being women and children, along with over 9,000 missing, hundreds of thousands displaced, and famine causing the death of 348 Palestinians, including 127 children.
