Guards at Al-Aqsa Mosque foiled an attempt on Friday by a group of settlers to enter the compound through the Bab Hutta gate while carrying a live animal intended for ritual sacrifice.
According to the Jerusalem Governorate, the settlers managed to pass the first metal barrier set up by Israeli police at the entrance corridor, but mosque guards quickly moved to close the gate and prevent them from entering the compound.
The incident coincided with what is referred to as the “Second Passover,” during which extremist “Temple” groups have sought to bring sacrificial offerings into the mosque’s courtyards.
These groups have previously attempted similar actions, including an incident last year when a live animal was briefly brought into the compound before worshippers and guards intervened and removed it.
