Iraq’s Supreme Judicial Council announced on Sunday the seizure of $20 million and the recovery of 60 kilograms of gold in the case involving the Deputy Minister of Oil for Refining Affairs.

According to the Iraqi News Agency (INA), citing an investigating judge at the Central Anti-Corruption Criminal Court: "In coordination with the Kurdistan Region, an amount of $20.34 million and 200 million Iraqi dinars was seized, alongside the recovery of 60 kilograms of gold and the seizure of 7 vehicles in the case of the detained defendant, Adnan Al-Jumaili, Deputy Minister of Oil for Refining Affairs, and involved parties."
The judge added that "follow-up and investigative procedures to trace the financial proceeds resulting from the squandering of funds in projects executed by the defendant and other involved parties led to the seizure of the aforementioned funds, gold items, and vehicles."
He emphasized that investigations and the pursuit of other accomplices remain ongoing until all legal procedures against them are completed.
Iraqi authorities arrested Deputy Minister of Oil for Refining Affairs Adnan Al-Jumaili in May as part of a corruption probe.
Anti-corruption measures in Iraq frequently target mid-level officials or lower-tier administrators, while high-ranking figures and top-tier corrupt individuals are rarely prosecuted.
In November 2024, the Iraqi judiciary handed down prison sentences to a businessman, former officials, and government employees for their involvement in the theft of $2.5 billion in tax deposits—a case widely dubbed the "Heist of the Century," marking one of the largest thefts in Iraq's history.
