U.S. President Donald Trump held a Situation Room meeting at the White House on Saturday morning to discuss the renewed crisis over the Strait of Hormuz and ongoing negotiations with Iran, according to U.S. officials speaking to Axios.
A senior U.S. official said that if no breakthrough is achieved in the negotiations soon, the war could resume in the coming days.
The meeting was attended by Vice President J. D. Vance, who is expected to take part in the next round of talks with Iran, along with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, according to the official.
The official added that White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, special envoy Steve Witkoff, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Dan Caine also attended the meeting.
Axios cited a source familiar with the U.S.-Iran talks as saying that the renewed crisis in the Strait of Hormuz emerged after progress had been made in narrowing differences over uranium enrichment and Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium.
Iran had earlier announced that it is reviewing “new” proposals received from the United States as part of mediation efforts led by Pakistan aimed at bringing the war to a final end.
