The Ansar Allah (Houthi) group in Yemen threatened early Sunday to completely close the Bab al-Mandab Strait to international navigation. This escalation links the security of the waterway to U.S. policies in the region.

Hussein al-Ezzi, a senior Houthi leader, stated that if Sana'a decides to close Bab al-Mandab, "all of mankind and jinn together would be utterly incapable of reopening it."
In a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account, al-Ezzi wrote that Sana'a’s ability to impose an "insurmountable closure" of the strait is a reality. He urged the U.S. administration and the international community to shift their policies toward Yemeni and regional issues.
He added that it would be best for U.S. President Donald Trump and the "colluding world" to immediately end all practices and policies hindering peace and to show the required respect for the rights of their people and nation.
Iranian Support
In a related development, an advisor to the Iranian Supreme Leader stated on Sunday that the security of the Bab al-Mandab Strait on the Red Sea "is now in the hands of our brothers in Ansar Allah."
The advisor added, "The security of the Strait of Hormuz and the Strait of Malacca is protected thanks to our strength and the strength of our strategic partners."
He further noted that "the Paris meeting regarding the Strait of Hormuz was a ridiculous show," while expressing appreciation for Spain's "independent and rational positions."
