In his briefing to the Council, Cordone emphasized that maintaining diplomatic momentum, ensuring the dignified return of displaced persons, and engaging all segments of Syrian society are steps that must be complemented by sustainable investment in recovery and development.
He explained that the past month has seen progress toward achieving stability and some success in insulating Syria from the multiple crises ravaging the region.
However, he stated that Israeli military activity in southern Syria continues, constituting a violation of existing agreements and international law. He noted that Israel has launched airstrikes targeting Syrian military infrastructure, while Israeli forces have continued to carry out near-daily incursions into Syrian territory, establishing checkpoints and detaining Syrian citizens.
The UN official renewed his call for Israel to cease these violations, respect Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and adhere to the 1974 Disengagement Agreement. He further urged Israel to release all Syrian detainees held in violation of international law. — (Petra)
