US President Donald Trump held a meeting in the Situation Room on Tuesday to discuss a "large-scale" attack on Iran, which would be broader than the current strikes around the Strait of Hormuz, three sources told Axios.

The sources noted that Trump joined senior members of his national security team in the Situation Room, including Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, White House envoy Steve Witkoff, and other senior officials.
They stated that the meeting focused on new plans to launch "devastating strikes" on strategic targets in Iran, in addition to the strikes against Iranian targets in the Strait of Hormuz. The White House declined to comment.
Axios explained that the meeting comes as the US military launched strikes in the Strait of Hormuz region and along Iran's southern coast for the fourth consecutive day. Most of the targets were air defense and radar systems, anti-ship missile sites, and drone launch sites.
US officials said the goal of the strikes is to significantly degrade Iran's ability to launch attacks against shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. On Tuesday afternoon, the US naval blockade on Iranian ports went into effect.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that it had completed an additional round of airstrikes against Iran, targeting dozens of military targets near the Strait of Hormuz and Iranian coastal areas for the fourth consecutive night.
Early Wednesday, Trump said that US strikes on Iran would continue until he decides they have achieved their purpose, emphasizing that Washington had previously urged Tehran to reach a deal.
Trump added, in statements to Fox News, that US representatives held talks with Iran on Tuesday, noting that Tehran is still showing "some resistance, but not much."
