The Director of the Zarqa Governorate Health Directorate, Dr. Khaled Abdel-Fattah, confirmed that the Ministry of Health's plan to activate evening shifts at comprehensive health centers, launched by the Minister of Health, Dr. Ibrahim Al-Bdour, has achieved tangible positive results in Zarqa Governorate since its implementation began early last May.
He stated that this plan is part of a strategic project executed by the Ministry of Health to reorganize the healthcare delivery path and alleviate the pressure on emergency departments in government hospitals. Its first phase began in areas surrounding Al-Bashir Hospital in the capital, Amman, achieving clear success that encouraged the Ministry to expand its implementation to Zarqa Governorate as a second phase.
He added that the five comprehensive health centers covered by the evening shift in Zarqa recorded a daily average of about 700 patients during the evening period, which extends from 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM, reflecting citizens' confidence in the services provided and their growing turnouts to benefit from them.
He pointed out that these centers dispensed approximately 500 medical prescriptions daily, including about 180 monthly prescriptions for chronic disease patients. This has facilitated patients' access to their medications and treatments near their places of residence and reduced the need to visit emergency departments at both Prince Faisal Hospital and Zarqa Government Hospital.
He explained that the centers included in the plan—Zarqa Comprehensive Health Center, Iskan Al-Hashemiyah Comprehensive Health Center, Wadi Al-Hajar Comprehensive Health Center, Al-Mushairfeh Comprehensive Health Center, and Hai Al-Rasheed Comprehensive Health Center—provide an integrated package of services including family medicine, emergency, laboratory, radiology, as well as daily and monthly medication dispensing.
For their part, the Director of Zarqa Government Hospital, Dr. Awad Al-Khaza'leh, and the Director of Prince Faisal Government Hospital, Dr. Samer Deeb, indicated that the results of the plan's implementation were directly reflected in the number of emergency department visitors. The number of emergency room patients at Zarqa Hospital dropped from about 1,500 to 1,100 patients daily (a 26% decrease), while the number at Prince Faisal Hospital's ER decreased from about 700 to 400 patients daily (a 42% decline).
They emphasized that preliminary indicators show success in absorbing mild and moderate cases that previously headed to hospital emergency departments, which contributed to easing overcrowding, improving the flow of healthcare services, and enabling hospital medical staff to dedicate themselves to urgent and critical cases.
They added that the results achieved so far reflect the success of the Ministry of Health's vision to bring services closer to citizens and provide them at the right time and place. They noted that the Zarqa Health Directorate continues to monitor and evaluate the performance of the centers covered by the plan to ensure the sustainability of positive outcomes and improve the quality of services provided to citizens.
They renewed their call for citizens to benefit from the evening shift services at comprehensive health centers, stressing that the success of this experience marks an important step within the Ministry's plan for a gradual nationwide expansion across the Kingdom's various governorates.
