Each unit will accommodate approximately 200 tents, totaling 1,000 tents overall. The project is funded locally through donations from Jordanian contributors designated for Gaza, in partnership with local associations inside the Strip and in coordination with the Jordan Hashemite Charity Organization.
According to a press statement issued Monday, the shelter units include the construction and rehabilitation of 40 sanitation facilities, as well as the building and equipping of nine fully furnished classrooms.
The organization stated that the intervention responds to urgent needs on the ground, as Gaza faces a severe shortage of shelter space for displaced families and those affected by the war. A dedicated safe space has also been established for widowed women and families of orphans. In some cases, tents were replaced for affected families, while in others existing tents were rehabilitated as an immediate measure to alleviate suffering.
The Director General of Tkiyet Um Ali, Samer Balqar, said the first phase has been completed with the installation of 250 residential tents in western Gaza, the port area, and eastern Gaza. The units also include a production kitchen and a facility housing three classrooms. He added that all five shelter units are expected to be completed before mid-Ramadan.
In recent months, the organization focused on providing food, blankets, and meat through land convoys and airdrops. The shelter units project represents a shift toward the early recovery phase, reflecting a flexible humanitarian approach aligned with families’ priorities and needs.
Balqar explained that the shelter units will include fully equipped production kitchens that, during Ramadan, will prepare 5,000 iftar meals daily for fasting families in Gaza. This will run in parallel with the preparation of 5,000 daily iftar meals at Tkiyet Um Ali’s headquarters in the Mahatta area of Amman, in addition to the continued distribution of 20,000 monthly food parcels across all governorates of Jordan and around 200,000 iftar meals throughout the Kingdom.
Beyond Ramadan, the kitchens will also create employment opportunities for Gaza residents as part of efforts to support livelihoods for families who lost income sources due to displacement and widespread destruction.
As part of the initiative, fully equipped classrooms have been constructed to enable children residing in the shelter units to continue their education. The project also provides educational services and psychosocial support to enrolled students, aiming to mitigate the long-term impact of the crisis on children’s right to learning and protection.
In a later phase, Tkiyet Um Ali plans to implement a school feeding program similar to the one it runs in Jordan, including the distribution of 100,000 date bars to students in Jordan under its national school feeding initiative.
The response is being carried out in partnership with local institutions in Gaza to ensure assistance reaches the most vulnerable groups, particularly children. The design of the interventions is based on continuous field needs assessments, reflecting the organization’s commitment to a humanitarian approach centered on human dignity and rights.
