Olive trees make up 72% of total area planted with fruit-bearing trees

AMMAN — Minister of Agriculture Khaled Al-Hanaifat said that the area cultivated with olive trees in the Kingdom now stands at 570,000 dunums, holding 11 million olive trees.اضافة اعلان

Inaugurating the olive harvest season at Al-Rabba, north of the Karak Governorate, on Saturday, he said that the land planted with olive trees constitutes 72 percent of the total area planted with fruit-bearing trees, and 20 percent of the total cultivated area in Jordan.

Hanaifat said that Jordan is one of the beast natural habitats for olive trees in the Middle East, as evidenced by the presence of perennial olive trees from Roman time in different areas of the Kingdom. These trees constitute between 15 percent and 20 percent of all olive trees.

The minister said that there are 139 olive oil presses in Jordan, with an estimated production capacity of 451 tonnes per hour.

He added that the olive sector is one of the most important agricultural sectors in Jordan, one which is linked with other sectors, especially the food industry.

According to Hanaifat, the majority of olive oil presses in the Kingdom are modern, equipped with advanced production lines, and keep pace with the latest world technology in the field, which contributes to the quality of the olive oil produced, and its ability to compete and excel.
