The new instructions establish clear requirements and standards for translator accreditation, including passing a specialized language test for translators holding academic qualifications related to languages. Translators without specialized academic language qualifications but who possess the required linguistic proficiency may also apply for the test after completing a specialized training course.

Minister of Justice Bassam Al-Talhouni said the instructions are part of the implementation of the amended Notary Public Law. They aim to develop mechanisms for accrediting translators and shift from traditional procedures to an institutional system based on verifying professional competence, strengthening oversight, and applying clear standards to ensure the quality and accuracy of translations.

Al-Talhouni explained that the importance of the instructions extends beyond regulating legal translation and defining accreditation requirements. They also establish an integrated legal and professional framework that protects the rights of service users, safeguards the integrity of official documents and transactions, and reinforces translators’ professional responsibility, thereby strengthening confidence in legal services in Jordan.

In this regard, the ministry signed three agreements with public universities to organize testing and conduct specialized training courses for translators in accordance with the new instructions. The universities are the University of Jordan, Al-Balqa Applied University and Yarmouk University.

The ministry announced that it will begin receiving applications for the accreditation of translators before notaries public through its electronic portal, with the aim of simplifying procedures, facilitating the submission and tracking of applications, and improving service delivery.

Al-Talhouni stressed that the new instructions represent a step toward developing the legal translation profession in Jordan by establishing clear professional standards based on competence, accuracy and reliability. This, he said, will help strengthen confidence in official documents and transactions and improve the quality of legal services.
