A Traffic Department representative said driving against traffic on roads separated by a central median is considered a serious traffic violation that could lead to collisions, injuries and fatalities.
The violation carries a fine of JD250, vehicle impoundment for 14 days, and suspension of the driver’s license for 60 days if the violation is recorded in person, in accordance with applicable legal procedures.
The representative stressed that driving against traffic, even for short distances, poses a serious risk to drivers and other road users. Some motorists commit the violation to shorten their route, potentially resulting in head-on collisions, with the severity of crashes increasing as the speed of approaching vehicles rises.
He urged drivers to comply with traffic rules and right-of-way regulations and not to disregard traffic laws, stressing the importance of raising traffic awareness to protect citizens, reduce accidents and contribute to a safer road environment.
Regarding morning traffic, the representative said roads are experiencing increased activity as school and university students and employees head to their destinations. Traffic patrols are organizing movement, separating lanes and addressing traffic disruptions around schools and universities to ensure students reach their destinations safely.
He called on citizens to follow safety messages, traffic guidance and road conditions through Public Security Directorate Radio and the Traffic Department’s official pages, and to comply with traffic instructions to ensure their safety and that of other road users.
Meanwhile, an officer from the External Patrols Operations Division said most highways were experiencing active but smooth traffic, with all roads open and no significant obstacles reported.
He said a vehicle rollover on the Amman-Irbid road earlier in the morning caused material damage and a temporary traffic disruption. The necessary measures were taken, and the vehicle was removed from the road and traffic was restored.
Over the previous 24 hours, authorities also dealt with a vehicle rollover on the Desert Highway that resulted in a moderate injury and obstruction of the left lane. The necessary measures were taken and the obstruction was cleared.
Authorities also responded to a collision on the Desert Highway near the Husayniya Bridge, which resulted in two moderate injuries and obstruction of the left lane. The necessary measures were taken and the obstruction was removed.
The accidents were attributed to sudden lane changes.
Authorities also dealt with a tire fire involving a cargo vehicle on the Dead Sea road near Al-Rama intersection. The fire was extinguished in cooperation with Civil Defense teams, and the vehicle was removed from the public road.
The officer noted that despite continued warnings, some motorists continue to commit serious violations, particularly speeding, sudden lane changes and the use of distractions while driving, all of which can contribute to accidents.
Authorities also dealt with several serious violations, including speeding, using mobile phones while driving and sudden lane changes. A traffic plan has been put in place to manage increased traffic activity over the weekend.
Representatives of the Traffic Department and External Patrols urged citizens to comply with traffic rules, right-of-way regulations and speed limits, avoid dangerous violations and refrain from distractions while driving.
They stressed that these measures are essential to maintaining smooth traffic flow and protecting the safety of drivers and other road users. They also urged motorists not to hesitate to call the unified emergency number 911 whenever necessary, stressing their full readiness to provide assistance around the clock.
