AMMAN — In a bid to combat antimicrobial resistance and ensure the prudent use of antibiotics, the Jordan Food and Drug Administration (JFDA) unveiled on Sunday a comprehensive set of measures that will come into effect on April 1, 2024.

Outlined by the JFDA Director General Nizar Muhaidat, these measures are integral to the national action plan spanning 2023-2025. The administration's commitment to this cause dates back to 2017, reflecting a sustained effort in this critical area, Al-Mamlaka TV reported.

Central to the new regulations is establishing a meticulous mechanism governing injectable antibiotics dispensing within the Watch group classification. These antibiotics will be further categorized into high and low monitoring categories, informed by national antibiogram data and expert consultations.

Muhaidat emphasized that the updated classification mandates the prescription of Watch group antibiotics using specialized forms. Moreover, public pharmacies will rigorously track the availability of these antibiotics, with some exclusively dispensed within hospital settings under the supervision of infectious disease specialists or relevant physicians.

The updated classification encompasses a range of injectables, identified by their scientific names, including:

  • Ciprofloxacin
  • Levofloxacin
  • Tobramycin
  • Ertapenem
  • Imipenem/Cilastatin
  • Ceftazidime
  • Piperacillin/tazobactam
  • Teicoplanin
  • Delafloxacin
  • Vancomycin IV
  • Meropenem
  • Streptomycin IV
  • Cefepime

However, exceptions are made for Cefuroxime and Ceftriaxone, which will continue to be dispensed from community pharmacies based on local availability and medical consultation, with a capped limit per pharmacy.

These regulatory amendments, published on the administration's official website, underscore a proactive stance in addressing global challenges amid limited antibiotic production. They are in line with the overarching regulatory efforts of the JFDA and are guided by recommendations from the Antibiotic Dispensing Control Committee.
