AMMAN — The first meeting of the joint Jordanian-Syrian committee for cooperation in combating drug smuggling across the Syrian border
into Jordan was held in Amman on Sunday.
According to a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, the Jordanian side was led by Chairman of Joint Chiefs
of Staff, Maj. Gen. Yousef Huneiti, and Director of General Intelligence
Department (GID), Maj. Gen. Ahmed Husni. On the Syrian side, the delegation was
chaired by Syria's Deputy Commander-in-Chief and Minister of Defense, Gen. Ali
Mahmoud Abbas, and Director of General Intelligence Directorate (GID), Maj.
Gen. Husam Louka, the Jordan News Agency, Petra reported.
During the meeting, they discussed cooperation to counter
the threat of drugs, including their sources of production and methods of smuggling.
The talks also addressed the issue of the parties involved
in organizing, running, and carrying out smuggling operations across the
borders into Jordan. They focused on the necessary measures to combat these
smuggling activities and confront the escalating danger they pose to the entire
region.
The decision to hold the committee's inaugural meeting in
Amman was made during the visit of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Ayman Safadi, to Syria on July 3.
By holding this meeting and engaging in productive
discussions, both Jordan and Syria demonstrated their commitment to tackling
the challenge of drug smuggling and enhancing security in the region.
