The Greater Amman Municipality said the new Mahatta Transport Complex will serve as an integrated transportation hub connecting the Amman-Zarqa Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) route with Amman’s internal BRT services and Raghadan Station, helping improve the efficiency of the public transport system.

According to a video released by the municipality on Monday, the complex covers approximately 45,000 square meters across three floors. One floor will be dedicated to BRT services between Amman and Zarqa, another to commercial and investment activities, while the third will serve Amman’s internal BRT services.
The project includes the expansion of King Abdullah I Street, the construction of dedicated BRT lanes, and connections linking the complex to Raghadan Station and Al-Istiqlal Street.
The complex will feature modern facilities equipped with intelligent transportation systems, elevators and escalators, as well as comprehensive services designed to ensure accessibility for people with disabilities and the elderly.
The municipality said the project represents a new step toward upgrading public transportation and providing more efficient and seamless mobility.
The Greater Amman Municipality, in partnership with the Ministry of Transport, is implementing the new Mahatta Transport Complex as one of its major strategic projects. The initiative is part of plans to improve public transportation, provide more efficient and seamless services, enhance the city’s appearance and modernize its transport infrastructure. The project has an estimated cost of JD 33 million.
The municipality said construction is expected to take two years. The station is located in an area experiencing heavy public transport, pedestrian and traffic activity, in addition to underground infrastructure and utility networks, including water and electricity lines, that will need to be relocated. Existing buildings at the site will also be removed.
The municipality said international safety codes were adopted during the design phase and that international standards and codes would be followed during construction. Specialized safety teams will also be deployed to protect project workers and members of the public in the surrounding area.
The municipality added that it has held regular meetings and coordination and consultation sessions with traders at the station through a committee representing them, with the aim of hearing their concerns, identifying their needs and addressing challenges to ensure their businesses can continue operating without harm.
It said discussions also focused on agreeing on appropriate solutions and alternatives that protect traders’ rights, serve the public interest and ensure the continuity of commercial and economic activity.
The municipality has secured alternative locations for traders near the original site in the same area to ensure the continuity of commercial activity and allow them to continue operating the same types of businesses.
The project is described as the largest of its kind undertaken by the Greater Amman Municipality. Major updates were made to the station’s design based on feedback and lessons learned from previously implemented transport stations, prompting a fundamental redesign of the project.
