Jails are overcrowded, says national prisons director

AMMAN — Director of the Jordan Department for Correction and Rehabilitation Centers (DCRCs) Brig. Gen. Ashraf Al-Omari said that the country’s 17 rehabilitation centers have a capacity of 13,282 inmates but are jam packed with more than 20,000 convicts, Al-Mamlaka TV reported. He said the prison overpopulation constitutes a challenge and a burden on the management of the centers and its organization. Omari added that the Correctional and Rehabilitation Centers Law guarantees inmates' right to health care, and as such as there is a resident specialist and a nurse in each center, appointed by the Ministry of Education, who follow up on all illnesses. He asserted that the administration of the correction and rehabilitation centers treats its inmates "with respect" and that they are people who have rights, the most important of which is health care, and the right to go on a hunger strike.
