The Independent Election Commission (IEC) had informed the House of Representatives that Baker Yahya Mohammad Al-Kasasbeh would be the new MP in the council. This follows the vacancy of the seat of MP Hasan Salah Al-Riyati due to a final judicial ruling sentencing Al-Riyati to two years in prison. Consequently, under Article (75) of the Constitution, his membership is revoked and his seat becomes vacant, as reaffirmed by Article (10) of the Election Law.
The IEC declared Baker Yahya Mohammad Al-Kasasbeh—who ran for the Islamic Action Front party (currently the Ummah Party) within the Islamic Action Front list in the Aqaba local electoral district—as the successor to Hasan Al-Riyati, having secured the next highest number of votes on the same list. This is in accordance with Article (57/A) of the House of Representatives Election Law No. (4) of 2022 and its amendments.
Discussing Laws
The House of Representatives will continue discussing the decision of the Education and Science Committee regarding the draft amending law for the Jordanian Universities Law of 2026 (starting from Article 7).
The draft law aims to align the legislation governing university operations with the institutional transformation and key legislative developments that Jordan's education sector has recently witnessed. This includes the approval of the creation of the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development, which officially and legally succeeds both the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.
The new draft law holds special significance as it serves as the primary reference for organizing educational affairs in higher education institutions. Thus, its alignment with the recently approved Education and Human Resources Development Law will directly impact the quality of the educational process and the efficiency of its outcomes. It will also enhance the capacity of universities to play their role in economic and social development, enabling them to adapt to global changes.
Among the most important amendments is reducing the number of board of trustees members in public and private universities from 13 to 9. This will contribute to improving the efficiency and speed of decision-making, positively reflecting on the governance of higher education institutions through more efficient councils with clearer authorities.
The House is also expected to begin discussing the Economy and Investment Committee's decision regarding the draft law to repeal the Civil Service Consumer Corporation Law of 2026.
According to the draft law, the unification and merger process aims to enhance institutional efficiency in providing basic commodities to citizens, ensuring the best prices, and boosting the ability to handle global inflation and rising prices. It also aims to strengthen the national food security system and ensure the sustainable availability of essential goods.
Furthermore, it aims to enable the corporation to compete better, improve the capacity to provide basic commodities, enhance strategic inventory, and utilize the logistical and administrative capabilities available to both corporations.
The operations of the branches of both corporations will be unified, purchasing and supply operations will be organized within a single system, and the competitiveness of the new corporation in local markets will be enhanced. This will enable it to provide goods to citizens at reduced prices and high quality, raise the efficiency of supply, storage, and distribution operations, and achieve operational and administrative savings.
