In a speech Friday evening, the King said:
"With God’s help and guidance, we begin a new phase in consolidating Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara and bringing a definitive end to this manufactured dispute, within a consensual framework, based on the autonomy initiative."
The UN Security Council stated on Friday that granting real autonomy to Western Sahara under Moroccan sovereignty could be the most viable solution to the conflict that has persisted for 50 years.
The Council called on all parties to engage in negotiations based on Morocco’s autonomy plan, first submitted to the United Nations in 2007. Morocco considers Western Sahara part of its territory, while facing the Algeria-backed Polisario Front, which seeks to establish an independent state in the region.
