He stressed that Parliament will fulfil its legislative and oversight responsibilities in a way that strengthens Jordan’s security and stability.

Speaking during an interview with the Jordanian television programme Sixty Minutes on Friday, Al-Tarawneh said Jordan had once again faced an attempt to undermine its security, stability and national unity.

He said those seeking to destabilise the Kingdom, undermine its social fabric, and weaken the unity of Jordanians and their solidarity behind the Hashemite leadership are the ones who stand to benefit from such acts.

Al-Tarawneh said this was part of a political reading of the situation, stressing the importance of not jumping to conclusions before investigations reveal the circumstances and facts surrounding the incident. He also expressed confidence in the security agencies, their expertise and their ability to carry out their duties.

He said members of the security agencies and the armed forces deserve full support and appreciation for their sacrifices in protecting the country and its citizens. He called for standing by them and confronting statements and social media posts that incite against security personnel, stressing that they are citizens carrying out their duty to protect everyone.

On confronting extremist ideology, Al-Tarawneh said the fight against terrorism cannot be limited to security measures. It requires coordinated efforts by official institutions and society, as well as greater awareness of the dangers of extremist ideas, particularly given their spread through social media platforms.

He emphasised the role of society in confronting extremism, rejecting its promotion and refusing to mediate on behalf of individuals involved in extremist-related cases. He warned that leniency towards such practices could help create an environment in which extremist ideology can take root, making it essential to address early warning signs from the outset.

Al-Tarawneh said religions and humanitarian values are founded on compassion, tolerance and respect for human life, adding that religion cannot be used as a cover to justify killing, violence or terrorism.

He also announced plans to launch an initiative aimed at confronting extremist ideology and its manifestations, raising public awareness of its dangers, strengthening social resilience and countering ideas that threaten the country’s security and stability.

He added that Parliament would consult legal experts and specialists to examine relevant legislation, identify loopholes that extremists might exploit, and work to address them as part of efforts to strengthen prevention and counterterrorism measures.
