Human Rights Council Orders Urgent Investigation into Violations in El Obeid, Sudan

The United Kingdom chaired the session, which reviewed widespread atrocities that recall those committed in North Darfur last year.

The Council passed the draft resolution during a special session in Geneva, following an initiative led by the UK with the support of several nations, after UN warnings of an increasing risk of atrocities against civilians in the city of El Obeid, North Kordofan State.

The resolution mandates the UN International Independent Fact-Finding Mission for Sudan to conduct an urgent investigation into the violations committed in El Obeid and its surroundings, and to present the findings to the Human Rights Council as soon as possible, as part of efforts to strengthen accountability for these abuses.

The move follows warnings from UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, that El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan State in western Sudan, faces the risk of a "new humanitarian and human rights disaster." He noted that civilians are subjected to a de facto siege, frequent drone attacks, and the targeting of civilian facilities—including markets, schools, fuel stations, and water and electricity infrastructure.

According to UN data, the Office of the High Commissioner has documented 15 drone attacks in and around El Obeid in recent weeks, resulting in the deaths of at least 45 civilians and dozens of injuries, with the actual toll expected to be higher.

During the session, the UK Ambassador for Human Rights, Eleanor Sanders, emphasized that the international community must not allow a repetition of the violations witnessed in El Fasher, North Darfur, last year. She stressed the necessity of swift action to protect civilians, ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid, and hold those responsible for the violations accountable.

Escalating battles in the Kordofan region since October 2025 have displaced more than 132,000 people, while displacement waves continue as the fighting expands, according to data from the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

The Sudanese Army and the RSF militia have been locked in a war since mid-April 2023, which has left tens of thousands dead and displaced millions both inside and outside the country.
