“We played with high morale and commitment for 90 minutes — the players gave all they had, despite exhaustion,” Abu Zema said at a press conference following Tuesday’s match.

Abu Zema added: In our next match, we hope to conclude the competition by scoring our seventh point with a win against Iran’s Foolad. I think that the players’ pride in their club had an impact in scoring this win, which is significant as we were playing against a major team like Nassr.”

Abu Zema concluded his statements by thanking Nassr’s Brazilian coach, Mano Menezes and thanking him for his complimentary remarks about Wehdat’s players.

The two teams faced off as part of the fifth and penultimate round of the league’s group stage.

For his part, Menezes described the outcome of Tuesday’s game as “unexpected, adding in a press conference that his team “could not control the match’s flow from the start. We had opportunities but did not take advantage of them, afterwards we tried to break through (Wehdat’s) defenses but failed.

“We lost important players...but improved a little in the second half but after sustaining a second goal, our task become even more difficult.”
Menezes commended Wehdat’s play, pointing out “it was not our day.”

“When the team loses, exhaustion becomes more apparent. The effect of exhaustion on the players was obvious in the missed passes,” the Brazilian coach added.

Round six is set to begin tomorrow (Thursday) where Wehdat will face Foolad and Nassr will play against Sadd.

The leader of each of the 10 groups and the six strongest runner ups will qualify to the 16-team playoffs.
