In a message posted on his Instagram account, Infantino wrote: “Congratulations, Lionel Messi, on an extraordinary international career that inspired millions and redefined the beautiful game!”
Highlighting Messi’s achievements, Infantino added: “2022 World Cup champion, Argentina’s most-capped player and all-time leading scorer, as well as the record holder for the most appearances in World Cup history. Your mesmerizing talent and humility will remain in our memories forever.”
The FIFA president concluded his message by thanking Messi, saying: “Thank you for every unforgettable memory while representing Argentina, and for bringing fans together in every corner of the world. I wish you all the best and continued success in your next chapter.”
Messi announced earlier Monday that he was retiring from international football after 21 years representing Argentina.
The Argentine star has won two Copa America titles with his country, in 2021 and 2024, as well as the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He also lost the 2026 World Cup final to Spain 1-0 after extra time on July 19.
Before those triumphs, Messi lost three consecutive finals with Argentina — the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and the 2015 and 2016 Copa America finals. The defeats led him to announce his international retirement at the time amid intense pressure, before reversing his decision and continuing his career with the national team.
