Barcelona host Athletic Bilbao tomorrow at the Spotify Camp Nou in the last of the postponed matches from the first round of La Liga, kicking off at 10:00 p.m. Mecca/Doha time.
Yamal, expected to start the match, enters it with 49 goals to his name during his Barcelona career, needing just one more to reach the milestone of 50 goals for the Catalan club.
Yamal's 49 goals across his previous seasons at Barcelona, in all competitions:
7 goals in 50 matches in the 2023–2024 season
18 goals in 55 matches in the 2024–2025 season
24 goals in 45 matches in the 2025–2026 season
If Yamal (19) finds the net against Athletic Bilbao, he will become the youngest player in Barcelona's history to reach 50 goals, according to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo.
With this achievement, Yamal would surpass legendary star Lionel Messi, who reached his 50th goal for Barcelona at the age of 20 years, 10 months, and 10 days.
Since breaking into the first team, Yamal has played 9 matches against Athletic Bilbao, including 6 in La Liga, scoring twice — the second of which came last season when the two sides met at San Mames. Yamal scored the decisive goal in that match, leading Barcelona to a 1-0 win and all three points.
More Than Just a Number
The newspaper suggests that Yamal's 50th goal will be "more than just a number," as the player is looking to achieve more than one goal in this match — including improving on the image he presented during Barcelona's match against Elche, when he gave a subdued performance and appeared visibly frustrated after being substituted.
Yamal made his first appearance for Barcelona late in the 2022–2023 season, specifically on April 29, 2023, at age 15, in a league match against Real Betis that ended in a 4-0 win for the Blaugrana.
The following season, Yamal began featuring more regularly and gradually established himself, before cementing his place and becoming one of the team's most prominent stars — indeed, according to many observers, Barcelona's number-one star.
Yamal opened his goal-scoring account for Barcelona against Granada in La Liga in October 2024, at the age of 16, according to the same Spanish newspaper.
