Wydad explained in an official statement on Sunday evening that the contract with Bento extends for one season, running until the summer of 2027.
The Moroccan club added in its statement: "This choice comes as part of the club’s direction toward turning a new sporting page, built on technical stability, clear vision, and enhanced competitiveness, in line with Wydad’s ambitions, history, and status."
It continued: "The club's management welcomes Paulo Sérgio Bento into the Wydad family, wishing him complete success in his new mission."
Bento, 58, has managed several clubs in Portugal throughout his coaching career, most notably Sporting CP, and possesses prior experience working with Arab clubs.
Wydad will mark the Portuguese manager’s fifth stint in Arab football, following spells with Dibba Al-Fujairah in the UAE, as well as Al-Taawoun, Al-Ettifaq, and Al-Okhdood in Saudi Arabia.
Wydad AC seeks to right its course domestically and continentally after finishing fifth in the Moroccan league last season, missing out on qualification for continental tournaments in the upcoming season. — (Agencies)
