Javier Tebas, President of LaLiga, launched a fierce attack on the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) and its president, Gianni Infantino, emphasizing that the organization is harming football and managing affairs as it pleases, catering to its own interests rather than those of the sport.

Speaking to the Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, Tebas said: "FIFA is destroying the football industry, and I believe its president should step down... I think his time is up, but he enjoys the backing of the system and the federations."
He added: "There isn't much more to add, is there? There is no alternative candidate because no one wants to run and lose. That is the system, and it is a flawed system from the ground up. It shouldn't continue, but the current situation prevents him from leaving."
Tebas also criticized FIFA's management during the World Cup, stating: "FIFA organizes things as it pleases, for whatever purpose it wants, and according to its own interests—not the interests of football."
He continued: "If they need a 27-minute break, they take it. The hydration breaks are just a gimmick... In LaLiga, we have breaks, but only when it is extremely hot. Here, in the stadiums of Dallas, Los Angeles, or Atlanta, there was air conditioning; I actually had to wear a jacket in the stands. It was a gimmick—a break for commercials."
He elaborated: "It is extremely difficult to change things because it is a system with active accomplices who cooperate with these kinds of decisions, and passive accomplices who remain silent, report nothing, and do nothing to prevent these situations from recurring."
He concluded: "This shows that we are governed by an institution that does and decides whatever it wants, whenever it wants, solely based on its own interests without considering the rest of football—let alone consulting with it. In many cases, this institution acts to the detriment of the sport."
It is worth noting that Spain won the 2026 World Cup title after defeating Argentina.
