The Royal Belgian Football Association announced on Friday the appointment of former Netherlands international Mark van Bommel as the new head coach of the Belgian national team on a two-year contract running through the UEFA Euro 2028 finals.

Van Bommel, 49, succeeds Rudi Garcia, whose contract expired at the end of July and was not renewed, despite leading Belgium to the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup earlier this month.
Van Bommel is particularly well known in Belgium for his successful spell with Royal Antwerp, where he guided the club to a historic Belgian league and cup double during the 2022–23 season. He is widely respected for his tactical expertise an area in which Garcia had faced criticism as well as his strong player-management skills.
Before taking charge of Belgium, Van Bommel managed PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands and VfL Wolfsburg in Germany.
During his playing career, Van Bommel earned 79 caps for the Netherlands, helping his country reach the 2010 FIFA World Cup final. At club level, he played for some of Europe's biggest teams, including Barcelona, Bayern Munich, AC Milan, and PSV Eindhoven.
