During the visit, Security Council members are scheduled to hold meetings with several Syrian officials, civil society representatives, and committees investigating incidents in the coastal region and Suwayda. They will also meet with Najat Rushdi, Deputy Special Envoy of the United Nations to Syria.

An official source told SANA that the visit comes amid growing international recognition of Syria’s sovereignty and unity, as well as its ability to lead its own national recovery process. The visit is also expected to help restore Syrians’ trust in the Security Council after years of suffering under “the Assad regime’s crimes.”

Samuel Žbogar, Slovenia’s permanent representative to the UN, whose country currently holds the Security Council presidency, previously stated in a press briefing that the visit aims to send a message of support to Syria, expressing hope that it would strengthen Syrians’ confidence in the United Nations.

The UN Security Council consists of 15 member states: five permanent members—the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, France, and China—and 10 non-permanent members: Sierra Leone, South Korea, Panama, Pakistan, Guyana, Greece, Algeria, Slovenia, Denmark, and Somalia.
