In a separate incident, the “Golden Sands” security checkpoint in the countryside of Tartous in western Syria came under gunfire and a hand grenade attack by unidentified assailants. Internal security forces are pursuing the attackers.
The new Syrian administration continues efforts to stabilize security and pursue remnants of the former Assad regime, particularly along the coastal region, traditionally a stronghold of senior regime officers.
Historically, on 8 December 2024, Syrian rebels entered Damascus, toppling the Bashar al-Assad regime (2000–2024), which had succeeded his father, Hafez al-Assad (1970–2000). During the Assad family rule, the Baathist regime maintained a tight security grip and committed widespread human rights violations, making the end of their rule a national liberation milestone for Syrians.
