A correspondent for Syria TV reported that the court charged a man named Hassan Haliyya with conspiracy, sabotage, leading armed gangs, financing them, and recruiting them to fight elements of the Ministry of Defense. Haliyya denied the accusations, stating that he was in Lebanon at the time of the events.

The presiding judge affirmed that the judicial proceedings will be national, impartial, and independent, in accordance with the provisions of the Syrian Penal Code.

He added: “We charge the defendants with crimes of sedition, inciting civil war, leading armed gangs, attacking public forces, murder, looting, and vandalism.”

The National Committee investigating the Syrian Coastal Events previously announced that the sessions would be public.

In this regard, the head of the National Committee for Investigation and Fact-Finding in the Coastal Events stated:
"Great effort has been exerted by the Syrian Ministries of Justice, Interior, and Defense, along with the judicial institution and criminal investigation bodies, to reach this outcome. We fully recognize the enormity and complexity of this case and the level of accuracy, legal assessment, prosecution, and arrests it requires, along with all other related details."

563 Defendants Referred to Court

Yasser Al-Farhan, spokesperson for the Independent National Committee for Investigating the Coastal Events, revealed that 298 defendants involved in attacks on civilians and 265 accused of attacking public security forces have been referred to court.

The committee announced the findings of its report, which it delivered to Syrian President Ahmad Al-Shara during a press conference on July 22, regarding the events witnessed in the Syrian coast last March.

What Happened on the Coast?

The coastal region of Syria witnessed bloody events last March that lasted several days, following attacks launched by regime-aligned gunmen against security forces. The events ended with Syrian government forces regaining control of the area after a large-scale operation involving “undisciplined factions” and accompanied by widespread violations, killings of civilians, as well as theft and burning of property.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights documented the deaths of 1,662 people between March 6, 2025, and April 16.

Following the coastal events, Syrian President Ahmad Al-Shara issued a decree establishing a fact-finding committee to investigate the causes that led to the outbreak of the events and the subsequent violations, including the killing of civilians and public security personnel.
