In a security alert issued the same day, the embassy stated that these militias are continuing to plan additional attacks against Americans and U.S.-associated targets nationwide, adding that “some entities linked to the Iraqi government continue to provide political, financial, and operational cover to these militias.”
The embassy reaffirmed that the travel advisory for Iraq remains at Level 4—“Do Not Travel”—urging U.S. citizens to avoid traveling to Iraq for any reason and to “depart immediately” if they are already in the country.
It also noted that Iraqi airspace has reopened with limited commercial flights operating, while warning of ongoing aerial risks including rockets, drones, and projectiles.
The embassy said the U.S. mission in Iraq continues to operate despite an ordered departure, providing assistance to American citizens, and advised against visiting the embassy in Baghdad or the consulate in Erbil due to security risks.
It further indicated that all routine consular services, including visa services, remain suspended, with emergency assistance available via email.
The embassy added that commercial flights are available from neighboring countries such as Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, and that land border crossings remain open, advising travelers to follow security updates and guidance.
U.S. citizens were urged to take precautionary measures, including monitoring security updates, avoiding protest areas, maintaining emergency preparedness, and staying in regular contact with family members.
Since the outbreak of the war, Iraqi military sites in several provinces have been targeted by drone and missile attacks. Armed Iraqi factions have also claimed responsibility for multiple attacks targeting the U.S. embassy in Baghdad and the U.S. consulate in Erbil.
