Jared Kushner, son-in-law and special envoy of U.S. President Donald Trump, meets Monday in Israel with Benjamin Netanyahu amid U.S. efforts to move forward with the implementation of the American peace plan for Gaza, which the Israeli prime minister continues to reject.

Kushner met Sunday with leaders of the Palestinian Hamas movement in Egypt before heading to Israel.
In late July, Hamas agreed to a U.S. roadmap aimed at launching the second phase of the peace plan, which stipulates the disarming of the movement and the withdrawal of Israel from the Palestinian enclave.
Netanyahu, however, officially rejected the document, demanding a "real" disarmament of Hamas.
Sources requesting anonymity reported that Kushner emphasized during Sunday's meeting with Hamas leadership members the necessity of disarming the movement, calling for "verifiable" measures.
According to one source, he stated that "Gaza will never be a source of terrorism against Israel."
The sources added that Kushner also stressed that Hamas would have no role in the future governance of Gaza.
Hamas, which has governed Gaza since 2007, announced in early July the dissolution of its civil administration, expressing its intention to transfer its responsibilities to the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza—a body established by the "Peace Council" composed of Palestinian technical cadres and tasked with overseeing the transitional phase in the Palestinian territory.
Following its meeting with Kushner, Hamas stated that it "called on the mediator brothers and the Peace Council to assume their responsibilities and compel the occupation to fulfill all its obligations in the first phase, end all violations, stop the killings and incursions, approve the roadmap for the second phase of President Trump's plan, and begin establishing the implementation timeline."
Kushner had earlier met with representatives from Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey—the mediating countries in the Gaza ceasefire agreement—as well as Nickolay Mladenov, the High Representative for Gaza in the "Peace Council" established by Trump to execute the agreement, according to Al-Qahera News.
Kushner also met with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi on Sunday in El Alamein, while Khalil al-Hayya, head of the Hamas political bureau, met with Hassan Rashad, head of Egyptian General Intelligence.
