An Israeli airstrike targeted the southern suburbs of Beirut on Wednesday evening for the first time since the ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel came into effect on April 17, according to Lebanon’s official National News Agency.
The agency stated briefly that “Israeli warplanes carried out a raid targeting Ghobeiry,” while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that a “senior commander in the Lebanese group” had been targeted.
In a joint statement with Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz, the Israeli military said it had struck the commander of the Radwan Force, Hezbollah’s elite unit, in Beirut.
According to Israel’s public broadcaster, the targeted figure was identified as Malek Ballout.
Netanyahu stated: “We promised to provide security for the residents of the north, and this is our way—and this is how we will achieve it.”
Lebanese field sources reported that the strike targeted the Ghobeiry area near Haret Hreik, close to the “Allameh” station, while Israeli warplanes flew at low altitude over the Bekaa Valley.
