It explained that the aid that has entered the Strip so far does not exceed 15% of the needs, adding, “We are unable to respond to many distress calls due to limited resources,” as the Strip faces a weather depression that the existing tents could not withstand.
The Civil Defense reported on Saturday that dozens of tents sheltering displaced people in the Al-Mawasi area west of Khan Yunis, in the southern part of the Strip, were flooded with rainwater, and that its teams were dealing with dozens of affected tents across the camps.
This comes as the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) called on the guarantors of the ceasefire agreement—as well as the United Nations, the Arab League, and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation—to urgently act to deliver humanitarian, medical, and shelter aid to Gaza.
Hamas also stressed that the tragic situation in Gaza highlights the urgent and critical need for relief and shelter, amid continued Israeli delays in allowing the entry of aid, tents, and mobile homes.
The Government Media Office said in a statement that with the onset of winter, suffering is worsening and the humanitarian crisis is deepening for nearly 1.5 million displaced people living in tents in Gaza.
Earlier, Gaza Civil Defense spokesperson Mahmoud Basal told Al Jazeera that thousands of tents sheltering displaced families in the Strip had been flooded with rainwater, describing the situation as catastrophic.
He revealed that the Strip needs 450,000 tents—if not more—to shelter the displaced.
Since dawn on Friday, Palestine has been affected by a weather system accompanied by a cold air mass, strong winds, and heavy rainfall, worsening the suffering of 1.5 million displaced people in Gaza after their worn-out tents were submerged by the rain.
