Iran warned Monday that ships violating its rules for transiting the Strait of Hormuz could face penalties including detention or seizure, raising potential risks for shipping through one of the world’s most strategically important waterways.

The state-controlled Strait Management Authority said vessels that violate what it described as Iranian regulations governing transit through the Strait of Hormuz could face fines, detention or seizure during subsequent crossings, according to Iran’s official IRNA news agency.
Meanwhile, Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said Tehran would prevent oil shipments from passing through the Strait of Hormuz if the U.S. economic campaign against Iran continued.
“If the economic war continues, not a single drop of oil will be exported through the Strait of Hormuz or from anywhere in the Gulf,” Rezaei said in a social media post.
He added that Iran would consider any country’s participation in the U.S. economic campaign against Tehran to be an act of war.
The statements come amid escalating Iranian rhetoric over its military capabilities and sovereignty over regional waterways, with Iranian officials reiterating their commitment to developing the country’s defense and missile systems.
The United States and Iran remain at odds over the Strait of Hormuz and the conditions for ending the conflict. The future of their negotiations also remains unclear following the expiration last Monday of a 60-day negotiating period established under a memorandum of understanding between the two sides.
