Al-Shar’a stated that all countries support Syria’s demand for Israel’s withdrawal, stressing the need for Israel to adhere to the 1974 Disengagement Agreement and emphasizing that any future agreement must guarantee Syria’s interests first.
He added that Syria is moving toward stability and openness to the international community after decades of isolation and economic sanctions caused by the policies of the former regime, noting that lifting sanctions—particularly the Caesar Act—will be a crucial factor in boosting economic recovery efforts.
His remarks came in an interview with Christiane Amanpour, CNN’s Chief International Anchor, published by the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) during his participation in the 2025 Doha Forum, held in the Qatari capital under the theme “Embedding Justice: From Promises to Tangible Reality.” Al-Shar’a stressed that Israel is attempting to deflect attention from the massacres it is committing in Gaza by exporting crises to other countries in the region. He explained that since liberation, Syria had sent positive signals aimed at establishing stability, but Israel responded with “extreme violence,” carrying out more than a thousand airstrikes and 400 incursions into Syrian territory.
The Syrian president questioned the concept of a “demilitarized zone,” emphasizing the need to understand how such a zone would be managed and secured in light of Israeli claims that it fears attacks originating from southern Syria.
Al-Shar’a noted that the absence of Syrian army and security forces in southwest Syria raises fundamental questions about how security can be ensured in the area.
He revealed that negotiations on this matter are currently underway, with the United States actively involved. He stressed that all countries support Syria’s demands for Israel to withdraw to the lines held before December 8 of last year, address the security concerns of both sides, and guarantee their safety.
“The path the country is taking is the correct one, and every step taken has served the public interest,” he said, affirming that Syria has regained an important regional and international standing and has transformed from a state associated with crises into a place where hope is born—by establishing a living model of regional stability.
