Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco have found that drinking coffee may lower the risk of atrial fibrillation, a common heart rhythm disorder that causes rapid and irregular heartbeat.

The study, published in JAMA, showed that consuming one cup of coffee daily reduces the risk of atrial fibrillation by 39%. This condition can increase the risk of stroke or heart failure.
The research involved 200 participants with persistent atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter, all of whom underwent cardioversion procedures to restore normal heart rhythm. Participants were divided into two groups: one consumed at least one cup of coffee daily, while the other abstained completely from caffeine for six months.
Results indicated that the coffee-drinking group experienced a significant reduction in recurrence of irregular heartbeats. Researchers noted that coffee may have anti-inflammatory effects and can replace sugary drinks, alcohol, and energy drinks, thereby reducing strain on the heart and improving cardiovascular health.
