Researchers have found that taking part in social activities may help preserve memory and cognitive abilities as people age.

The study found that participating in at least three beneficial activities was associated with better cognitive performance, with women over the age of 60 among those who appeared to benefit the most.اضافة اعلان

Which activities were most beneficial?

Researchers found that the following activities were associated with improved cognitive abilities or a lower risk of cognitive decline:

Volunteering and joining sports clubs.

Caring for children and grandchildren.

Attending training courses and learning new skills.

By contrast, participation in political, community or religious groups did not show a consistent association with improved cognitive abilities.

How was the study conducted?

The study was conducted by researchers at China’s Shandong University and analyzed data from 57,793 people aged between 57 and 73 across 24 countries, including England, the United States and China.

Participants were followed for an average of six years, with researchers assessing memory, planning and organizational abilities, as well as the ability to perform multiple tasks.

The findings showed that participants involved in social activities scored higher on cognitive tests than those who did not take part in such activities.

Researchers suggested that activities that stimulate the brain may help strengthen connections between brain cells, supporting the preservation of cognitive functions.

However, the study shows an association between certain activities and better cognitive performance; it does not prove that these activities directly prevent dementia.
