Occasional forgetfulness is normal at any age, according to Maxim Pankov, a neurology specialist.
He explained that forgetting is a natural part of the memory process and plays a role in forming memories. It can also serve as a defense mechanism that allows people to gradually let go of negative emotions.

“However, persistent forgetfulness in young people should raise concern when it is accompanied by symptoms that may indicate depression or an anxiety disorder,” Pankov said.
Depression is characterized by low mood, loss of interest in activities that were previously enjoyable, persistent feelings of guilt, increased fatigue, poor concentration, and disrupted sleep and appetite.
The doctor noted that anxiety disorders may also involve excessive worry that is difficult to control, as well as persistent expectations that something bad will happen.
“A person may also experience irritability, sleep disturbances, persistent muscle tension, increased sweating and dry mouth,” he said.
Depressive and anxiety disorders can negatively affect memory and the ability to process information, which may contribute to increased forgetfulness.
Without timely treatment, the symptoms of these conditions, including forgetfulness, may worsen and eventually interfere with daily life.
