Germany and other Central European countries returned to Central European Time (CET), which is one hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), replacing Central European Summer Time (CEST), which is two hours ahead of GMT.

Germany reintroduced the seasonal clock change in 1980 as a measure aimed at saving energy and making maximum use of daylight. Standard time will remain in effect until March 28 next year.

The National Metrology Institute of Germany, based in the northern city of Braunschweig, is responsible for regulating the automatic time change.

Experts at the institute ensure that radio-controlled clocks, station clocks and many industrial timepieces receive the official time signal through a long-wave transmitter known as DCF77, located in Mainflingen near Frankfurt.
