Vitamin D is considered essential not only for bone health but also for the prevention of chronic diseases, enhancing the immune system, and reducing mortality rates.

The journal MPDI points out that current clinical guidelines primarily focus on protecting the musculoskeletal system while downplaying the broad positive effects of vitamin D on the body. A review of scientific data has shown that this nutrient helps maintain immune function and reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases, several types of cancer, type 2 diabetes, cognitive decline, and pregnancy complications.
This work summarizes findings from large-scale studies indicating that a vitamin D level above 30 ng/mL (75 nmol/L) is significantly associated with a reduced likelihood of serious illnesses and death. It is known that a large portion of the population in various parts of the world suffers from vitamin D levels below 20 ng/mL, which calls for measures to increase it.
According to scientists, a concentration above 30 ng/mL in the blood can be achieved by taking 2000 IU (50 micrograms) of vitamin D3 daily. For optimal protection against a wide range of health effects, including reduced risk of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and pregnancy complications, a daily dose between 4000 and 6000 IU is preferred.
The report emphasizes that many large randomized trials failed to show clear benefits of vitamin D due to errors such as high baseline vitamin D levels among participants or the use of low supplement doses, which underestimates the vitamin’s true effectiveness.
Additionally, the study recommends integrating data from both randomized and observational studies into future clinical guidelines, while considering individual differences in vitamin D absorption capacity.
