U.S. President Donald Trump said late Friday into Saturday that an Iranian response is expected soon.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that Washington expects a response from Iran on Friday regarding U.S. proposals aimed at reaching an agreement to end the war with Iran.
Confrontations between the United States and Iran resumed on Friday in the Strait of Hormuz, with the U.S. military announcing that it had targeted two Iranian oil tankers, while Washington said it was awaiting Tehran’s response to its proposal to halt the war.
Since the start of the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran on February 28, Iran has effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, through which one-fifth of global oil production and liquefied natural gas shipments normally pass, causing significant disruption to global markets and maritime shipping. In response, the United States imposed a blockade on Iranian ports.
Iranian forces also announced on Friday that they had detained an oil tanker subject to U.S. sanctions and carrying Iranian oil, though they did not clarify the reason in their statement.
As part of efforts to control maritime movement, Iran has established a navigation authority for the Strait of Hormuz responsible for authorizing vessel passage and collecting transit fees, according to the specialized publication Lloyd’s List.
