Trump Arrives in Beijing for High-Stakes Summit with President Xi Jinping
U.S. President Donald Trump arrived in Beijing on Wednesday evening for a critical state visit aimed at managing deep-seated tensions between the world's two largest superpowers. This marks the first visit by a U.S. president to China in nearly a decade, since Trump’s own visit during his first term in November 2017.اضافة اعلان

The summit comes at a time of significant geopolitical upheaval, with a heavy agenda focused on international trade, the ongoing war with Iran, and the sensitive issue of Taiwan.

Key Issues on the Agenda
The Iran War & Global Energy Security:
The shadow of the conflict with Iran looms over the talks. Washington is reportedly seeking China’s help to pressure Tehran into reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime corridor for global oil supplies. Given that nearly half of China's crude oil imports pass through this strait, Beijing shares an interest in unblocking the waterway to prevent a global energy shock.

Trade & Economic Stability:
Discussions are expected to follow up on the Busan Trade Truce reached in October 2025. China is expected to announce significant purchases of American agricultural products, energy, and Boeing aircraft. In return, Beijing is pushing for the easing of U.S. curbs on advanced semiconductor exports and a reduction in trade barriers.

The Taiwan Question:
Beijing is expected to pressure the U.S. regarding its recent $11 billion arms package for Taiwan. President Trump has indicated a willingness to discuss the matter of arms sales, while China continues to seek a shift in Washington’s rhetoric toward "opposing" rather than "not supporting" Taiwanese independence.

Artificial Intelligence & Technology:
The "Technological Cold War" remains a central point of contention. The leaders are expected to discuss non-binding guidelines for AI safety and misuse, particularly regarding the military adoption of AI weaponry.

Diplomatic Context
President Trump was greeted at Beijing Capital International Airport by Chinese Vice President Han Zheng and other high-ranking officials. The visit, scheduled from May 13 to May 15, includes a state banquet and a planned visit to the Temple of Heaven.

Accompanying the President is a high-level delegation, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, and prominent tech leaders such as Elon Musk and Tim Cook.

While analysts describe the summit as an effort toward "tactical stabilization" rather than a complete reset of relations, the optics of the meeting remain vital for both leaders as they navigate domestic economic pressures and regional security challenges. — AFP
