The report added that it remains unclear whether the helicopter was shot down by Iranian fire, suffered a technical malfunction, or encountered another issue.

Neither the White House, the US State Department, nor the US Central Command immediately responded to requests from Reuters for comment on the incident.

For his part, US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that the two pilots whose helicopter reportedly crashed near the Strait of Hormuz were unharmed.

"The pilots are fine, yes, no one was hurt," Trump told reporters after attending a game in the NBA Finals.

"We will issue a report on that tomorrow," he added, without commenting on the causes of the crash.

Regarding the war with Iran, Trump stated that US diplomatic efforts to reach an agreement with Tehran are now in their final stages.
