Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Sunday that he had a “good conversation” with US President Donald Trump about trade relations between the two countries, which have become strained after Washington imposed sweeping tariffs on its northern neighbour.اضافة اعلان

In a social media post, Carney said the latest talks followed “recent constructive discussions on the outline of a mutually beneficial trade agreement.”
“Our teams will work over the coming weeks to achieve that outcome,” he added.

During his second term, Trump has disrupted global trade by imposing tariffs on both allies and adversaries, with Canada, one of the United States’ largest trading partners, frequently in his sights.

High-level trade talks between the two countries collapsed in August, prompting Trump to impose a new set of tariffs, some of which he rolled back ahead of the crucial US midterm elections.

Affordability remains a key issue for voters, while Trump's tariffs have fuelled inflation across the country.

In response, Canada imposed tariffs on US products, prompting Trump to retaliate with another round of duties, reaching as high as 50% on certain goods.

Last week, Trump said he expected a new trade agreement with Canada to be reached “very soon,” but provided no details.

On Sunday, he confirmed that he had held talks with Carney, saying officials had developed “a vision for a very good deal with Canada.”

“We have a vision for a deal that will be great for our farmers, great for our country, and good for Canada too,” he told reporters ahead of a campaign rally in Iowa.
