Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Sunday that he had a "good conversation" with US President Donald Trump about trade relations between the two countries, which have been strained after Washington imposed sweeping tariffs on its northern neighbor.

Carney wrote on social media that the recent talks were a follow-up to "constructive discussions held recently on the outlines of a mutually beneficial trade agreement."
He said: "Our teams will work over the coming weeks to achieve that result."
During his second term, Trump has caused turmoil in global trade by imposing tariffs on friends and rivals alike, with Canada, one of the United States' largest trading partners, frequently in his crosshairs.
High-level trade talks between the two countries collapsed in August, prompting Trump to impose a set of new tariffs, some of which he withdrew shortly before the crucial midterm elections in the United States.
Affordability is a central issue for voters, and the tariffs Trump imposed have fueled inflation across the country.
In response, Canada imposed duties on American products, prompting Trump to retaliate with another round of tariffs reaching 50% on certain goods.
Last week, Trump indicated he expects a new trade agreement with Canada "very soon," but offered no details.
On Sunday, he confirmed that talks were taking place with Carney, noting that officials had reached a "concept of a very good deal with Canada."
He told reporters ahead of a campaign rally in Iowa: "We have a concept of a deal that will be great for our farmers, great for our country, and good for Canada too."
