The Permanent Observer of the League of Arab States to the United Nations, Majed Abdel Aziz, condemned last night Israel’s recognition of the so-called “Somaliland,” during an emergency session of the UN Security Council.

Abdel Aziz pointed out that the occupying power in the Palestinian territories and the Arab Syrian and Lebanese lands is seeking to legitimize the “separatist efforts of Somalia’s northwestern region, known as the ‘Somaliland Region,’ to secede from the Federal Republic of Somalia.”
He said that such recognition serves as a pretext for “illegal presence on Arab African Somali territory, in pursuit of well-known, rejected, and condemned political, security, and economic agendas,” aimed at facilitating plans for the forced displacement of the Palestinian people and allowing unrestricted access to northern Somali ports to establish military bases there.
He added that the League of Arab States stresses the necessity of considering this Israeli move a threat to international and regional peace and security, and the need to compel Israel, as the occupying power, to immediately reverse this decision, as it constitutes a flagrant violation of international legitimacy and the principles governing multilateral international relations.
