Jordan’s inflation up by 1.76%

AMMAN – On Monday, the Department of Statistics (DoS) revealed that the general inflation rate in Jordan increased by 1.76 percent during the first two months of this year, reaching 109.87 points compared to 107.97 points for the same period last year, Al-Ghad reported.

According to the monthly report from the DoS, several commodity groups significantly contributed to this rise:

  • Water and sanitation: Increased by 7.34 percent.
  • Personal luggage: Rose by 6.44 percent.
  • Union contributions: Contributed 5.86 percent.
  • Tobacco and cigarettes: Went up by 5.21 percent.
  • Vegetables, dried legumes, and canned goods: Showed a rise of 4.50 percent.
  • Rent: Contributed 4.12 percent.

In February 2024, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) reached 110.02 points, compared to 108.32 points for the same month last year, marking a 1.57 percent increase.

However, some factors mitigated the overall increase:

  • Fuel and Lighting: Decreased by 1.74 percent.
  • Household Textiles: Fell by 1.25 percent.
  • Culture and Entertainment: Decreased by 0.85 percent.
  • Beverages and Refreshments: Showed a slight decline of 0.62 percent.


In February 2024, the monthly inflation rate rose by 0.27 percent, reaching 110.02 points compared to 109.72 points in January.

Notably, the following commodity groups significantly contributed to the overall inflation increase in February 2024 compared to January 2024:

  • Vegetables, Dried Legumes, and Canned Goods: Rose by 2.81 percent.
  • Fruits and Nuts: Increased by 2.23 percent.
  • Meat and Poultry: Went up by 0.99 percent.
  • Transport: Contributed 0.45 percent.
  • Sugar and Related Products: Showed a slight increase of 0.38 percent.
