AMMAN — Head of the Parliamentary Energy
Committee
MP Firas Al-Ajarmeh said that Jordanians’ experience with government
subsidies proved that they are a failure and that past subsidies were in fact
deceiving, Jo24 said, quoting his speech on Hayat FM radio.

Ajarmeh said that the government cannot guarantee
that it will continue to subsidize electricity, but for now there will be no
change. He also wished to reassure the citizens that the government’s
insistence that citizens register to receive subsidies for the new electricity
tariff is not done with bad intentions, adding that the warning about higher
electricity prices comes “so that citizens not be surprised”.
He also said that excluding households that use
renewable energy from subsidies “is a great injustice, especially as it targets
citizens and excludes large facilities”, stressing that citizens resort to
renewable energy to reduce the high living costs under the current difficult
economic circumstances.
