The Greater Amman Municipality said sidewalk improvement works in several areas of the capital are aimed at providing safe and connected spaces for pedestrians, while protecting green cover by relocating trees that cannot remain in their existing locations and replanting them in more suitable areas.

The municipality said the work is limited to trees that obstruct pedestrian movement on narrow sidewalks, following technical inspections and assessments at each location. It stressed that sidewalks are a right for pedestrians, particularly children, older people and persons with disabilities, to move safely within their neighbourhoods.
The municipality said it has preserved large numbers of trees by pruning branches that obstruct pedestrian movement or pose a public safety risk. Trees are relocated only when pruning or other technical measures cannot resolve the issue, ensuring pedestrian safety and unobstructed movement along sidewalks.
Trees suitable for replanting are transferred according to established procedures to planting containers and nurseries, where they are prepared for replanting in parks and other locations with adequate space and suitable growing conditions. Trees that are compatible with sidewalk layouts and do not obstruct movement remain in place.
Meanwhile, the municipality’s Agriculture and Forestry Directorate continues to plant between 120,000 and 130,000 seedlings annually as part of its plan to expand Amman’s green areas through a carefully planned urban approach that takes into account the suitability of different species for specific locations, as well as pedestrian movement, safety and service requirements.
The municipality said the measures combine urban environmental improvement with the protection of green cover, helping make neighbourhoods across the capital more walkable and improving residents’ quality of life.
The municipality has documented, through photographs and video footage, the relocation of trees suitable for replanting, their preparation in nurseries and subsequent replanting at alternative sites, alongside the sidewalk rehabilitation works.
