AMMAN — The minister of labor’s decision
to include agricultural workers in the Food Industry Workers Union was met with
disapproval from activists and unionists, according to AmmanNet.
They argued that the decision contradicts the
agricultural workers’ system and domestic and international laws, which
guarantee the right of labor union representation.
The minister’s
decision was based on the amendments to the 2019 Labor Code, which granted him
the authority to classify occupations and jobs for the purpose of facilitating
the establishment of trade unions, after the Act in 2010 granted this power to
the Tripartite Commission on Labor Affairs.
Article No. 98 of the Labor Act amended the classification
by including agricultural workers in the Food Industry Workers’ Union, domestic
workers in the Service Workers’ Union, and cement workers in the Mining
Workers’ Union, instead of the Construction Workers’ Union.
